François-Auguste Gevaert est décédé le 24 décembre 1908. Cinq jours plus tard, il recevait des funérailles nationales.
Le périodique musical anglais The Musical Times résumait selon ces mots cette vie si riche et bien remplie :‘In fact, he was one of the rare musicians who combine with exceptional talents for composition the gifts of the deep thinker and powerful writer on the origin, development and scientific aspect of their art’.
