Gevaert reappeared as a nominee for the directorship of the Ghent Conservatoire, but after the death of François-Joseph Fétis he became on the 26 April 1871 the second director of the Brussels Conservatoire. The duty as conservatoire director was combined with the one as master of the king’s chapel.
