Already at the end of 1869 Gevaert wanted to resign, as he felt he could not improve the level of the Opéra any further. But finally it was the French-German war that put an end to his remarkable Parisian career. Three days after the battle of Sedan the siege of Paris began and the doors of the Opéra closed. Out of necessity Gevaert returned to Belgium
