Gevaert was a very prolific composer. Scarcely three months after the creation of his second opera, his choir work Adieux à la mer was composed on 3 March 3 in Ghent. With this ‘méditation poétique’ with lyrics from Alphonse de Lamartine, he took a symphonical farewell to his country of origin.
