Like several composers of his generation the young Gevaert saw himself mainly as an opera composer. His ‘grand opéra’ in three acts Hugues de Somerghem received its première on 26 March 1848 in Ghent.
Less than one year later, on 5 January 1849, his ‘opéra bouffon’ La comédie à la ville was composed in the same city.
