From 1845 untill 1848 Gevaert was teaching at the Jozefietencollege in Melle. In the library of this college some remarkable autographs from the young composer are preserved, e.g. the cantata Le Lion de Flandre, which received its première on 5 april 1848 in the boarding school in Melle.
