François-Auguste Gevaert was born 31 july 1821 in Huise, near Oudenaarde. He received his first music lessons in the local parish church and he had already composed a mass at the age of nine. Legend has it that the village doctor convinced father Gevaert to inscribe his talented son in the Conservatoire de Musique in Ghent, which had recently been founded in 1835.
